The Shire of Montana

The Shire of Montana was recently featured in the Huffington Post article,“The 1 Weirdest Thing You Never Knew About Your Home State,” on March 11. Along with quirky and strange places in other states, such as a tree that became the legal owner of itself in Georgia, and a Louisiana penitentiary that has a public golf course, the Shire was highlighted as a must-see destination in Montana.

Established in 2008, the Shire is a whimsical escape for adults, located in remote northwest Montana. The Shire features a guest house styled to imitate a hobbit home from J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional world, Middle Earth. Complete with a troll bridge and fairy habitats, this unique road trip destination is open from May 1, to November 1.

Surrounding the hobbit home, where guests can stay, is a small village that awakens at night. A magical display of gleaming lights pouring from the cavalcade of mushrooms that line Hobbit Lane, lead to the lighted mural of a hobbit village.

“The whimsical experience here will stay with you for a lifetime. Come visit us this season! It could be hobbit-forming,” said owner, Steve Michaels.

The entire hobbit village overlooks the scenic Whitepine Alpaca Ranch, which features an old-fashioned, red barn built in 1918 and a pond that attracts a myriad of waterfowl. Guests might also see deer, elk, and moose swimming in the pond. Coyotes, mountain lions and the occasional bear or wolf visit as well.

The guest house features two bedrooms, HD-Blu-Ray TVs, land line phones, Wi-Fi, XM Radio and a fully equipped designer kitchen. The deck also features a gas BBQ.

The Shire of Montana is available for $295 per night for two people. There is a two night minimum for weekend and holiday rentals. Because of the intimate details and hand crafted displays, no children or pets are allowed.
