California Bookstore Day is like getting an extra holiday on the calendar, but with less egg nog and more Neil Gaiman
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 18, 2014
The first-ever California Bookstore Day (CBD), set for Saturday, May 3rd, 2014, promises to delight book lovers of all ages and interests thanks to the incredible combination of authors, events, and exciting day-of activities planned at nearly 100 participating independent bookstores across the state.
From Eureka to San Diego, California book lovers can stop into their favorite local participating store to enjoy a number of planned community-oriented literary events. While there, they can also purchase exclusive, CBD-only books and book-related items from authors such as Neil Gaiman, George Saunders, Don DeLillo, Lemony Snicket, Michael Pollan, Lisa Brown and many others. These books and items are not available anywhere else on any other day.
Across the state, bookstores are planning their unique events for California Bookstore Day, including readings featuring Dave Eggers, Lisa Brown, Isabel Allende, Michael Pollan, Wendy McNaughton, and many, many more. Visitors to their favorite participating bookstore can expect to enjoy everything from giveaways to parties, food trucks to fortune telling. Check with your local participating bookstore for more information on specific events. Zack Ruskin, marketing coordinator for participating CBD bookstore Book Passage, summed up the day by saying, “California Bookstore Day is like getting an extra holiday on the calendar, but with less egg nog and more Neil Gaiman.”
Michael Pollan, (Cooked, Food Rules, In Defense of Food, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, The Botany of Desire) is a proud supporter of independent California bookstores and a participating CBD author. Pollan noted, "Like many authors whose work isn't easily slotted into a tried and true commercial category, I feel a large debt of gratitude to the independent booksellers of California—people who actually read the first, quirky books of a new writer and then convince their customers to give those books a try.”
California Bookstore Day is proud to announce 13 special items created by major authors and publishers especially for CBD 2014. These limited edition, unique books and word-based items will be available at participating CBD bookstores statewide only on May 3. One of the most eagerly anticipated items for sale is an exclusively designed book-length story based on Sleeping Beauty by Neil Gaiman. Another is the “Classic California” boxed set, including novels by Charles Bukowski, John Fante, Armistead Maupin, and Elmore Leonard. Children—and the grownups who love them—will also be delighted by Do You Smell Carrots?, an anthology of jokes for kids featuring more than 50 favorite children’s authors including Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Jon Scieszka (The Stinky Cheese Man), and Lynne Reid Banks (The Indian in the Cupboard series).
