ClearSky Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of hosted mobile data infrastructure and managed services to wireless operators, today announced a partnership with Knight Enterprises, one of the nation’s largest broadband installation companies, to offer total lifecycle management of small cell deployments in the Southeastern US. By combining ClearSky’s network data collection capabilities with geo-location-based planning tools, small cell design can now be performed with unprecedented accuracy and resolution. Performing over 2,000 truck rolls per day for the cable broadband industry, Knight Enterprises brings unparalleled scale to site acquisition, backhaul provisioning, and installation capabilities for both indoor and outdoor small cell deployments. The partnership can provide end-to-end services including hot spot planning, design, site acquisition, backhaul sourcing, project management, installation, activation, monitoring, and break/fix.
There is strong consensus in the wireless industry that the best way to enhance coverage and capacity on overloaded metropolitan networks is with an underlay of small cells to create a heterogeneous network. However, real world complexities in planning, deploying, and operating large-scale, small cell deployments have slowed the adoption of small cell technology.
ClearSky, through its RF & network engineering partner, offers an innovative software platform that provides comprehensive design and planning analysis. The platform can effectively and efficiently combine large amounts of RF and network utilization data from multiple sources and then use it to identify the optimal location of traffic hot spots and coverage holes within a cell site sector. Those areas identified as coverage or capacity problems are evaluated through a proprietary analysis algorithm, plotted as hot spots in the 3D mapping tool, and then used to predict the impact on KPIs for multiple placement scenarios. The tool can also display utility mounting points and fiber coverage maps sourced through Knight’s utility and cable industry contacts.
As both a wholesaler and master technician to the cable industry, Knight is a single source for purchasing and provisioning backhaul connections as well as obtaining attachment rights and building access. Knight technicians are able to perform the backhaul and small cell installation on a single truck roll, either indoors or outdoors. In coordination with the Knight team, ClearSky NOC personnel remotely manage activation and integration. After the turn-up is complete, ClearSky and Knight offer ongoing monitoring of both the small cell and the backhaul link. ClearSky analyzes the traffic and performance and, when necessary, Knight technicians are dispatched to fix detected problems.
The business model is also innovative. After the planning phase is complete, the partnership can offer total lifecycle management for a predictable, one-time installation fee and a fixed monthly fee per small cell. The monthly fee can also include the cost of the small cell itself, vastly reducing CAPEX in large deployments.
“Supporting the cable broadband industry over the past two decades has enabled us to build a team of professionals that are experts in site acquisition, backhaul installation, hardware deployment, and follow-up maintenance,” stated Jeff Knight, President and CEO of Knight Enterprises. “Combining this with our ability to offer wholesale broadband pricing at a highly competitive rate creates an opportunity for a wireless operator to eliminate the middle men and finally see some relief from both the high upfront and excessive ongoing costs of past small cell deployments.”
“Using a single planning tool for hot spot analysis, backhaul planning and mounting locations, then rolling a single truck for backhaul and small cell installation followed by a single source for ongoing monitoring creates a powerful new paradigm,” said Dean Fresonke, Senior VP of Business Development at ClearSky. “Our goal is to convert small cell installation from a costly, labor-intensive, piecemeal process to a fully integrated workflow.”
