In this blues guitar lesson sample video, now available on, Jon MacLennan teaches how to play a cool riff from the song “I can’t quit you babe” in the style of Buddy Guy.

“Here’s a great opening blues phrase that’s heard in countless records,” says MacLennan. Jon explains how to play this lick as follows; 3rd string, 6th fret with 2nd finger and then slide up one half step to the 7th fret. Then he puts his first finger on the 6th fret of the 2nd string and then to the 8th fret with his 3rd finger. Next he uses his first finger on the 6th fret of the first string and plays that note twice. Jon says that this sequence is based on a Bb (B flat) Triad and there are many licks based out of this in both blues and jazz guitar playing. George “Buddy” Guy is an American Blues Guitarist from Lettsworth Louisiana. He is a pioneer of the Chicago Blues genre and was a member of the Muddy Waters band in the 1960’s. Buddy was a big influence on the players like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Paige and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Guy is ranked number 30 on Rolling Stones list of “100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time”. Over the course of his career he has played on 72 albums and has won six Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
