Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) April 11, 2014
BikeWalkKC, the region's cycling and pedestrian advocacy group, is working to bring the nationwide movement of getting more women on bikes to Kansas City by hosting the area's first women's bicycling summit. The KC Women's Bike Summit will take place at the Kauffman Foundation on May 10.
In the last few years, Kansas City has made huge strides to becoming a more bikeable community. Bike commuting jumped 42% in Kansas City last year, compared with just a 10% increase nationwide. In 2012, Kansas City, MO ranked 49th out of the 70 most populous US cities for bike commuting. In 2014, 12 miles of bike lanes are coming on Grand, 18th, 20th, and we are making strides every day for biking in KC.
The momentum is not just growing for bike commuters in general, but also for female cyclists. BikeWalkKC has made dedicated efforts to educate and promote cycling to women, as well as to connect with local female-run organizations and groups.
The purpose of the summit is to gather women together to support all types and abilities of riders, to encourage cycling and to promote healthy lifestyles from girls to grandmas.
"In order to make the summit a success, BikeWalkKC needs sponsors who support physical activity, empowerment and encouraging women of all ages to ride a bike," says Marketing and Communications Director Sarah Shipley.
The following organizations have already signed on as sponsors: Velo +, US Bank, Timbuk2, Paceline Products, KC Life, Port Authority of KC, Women's Multi-Sport, Road Groups, Shipley Communications, SPIN! Pizza, Women's Adventure Magazine, Vitality Chiropractic, and Boneshaker Magazine. Those interested in sponsoring should contact sarah (dot) shipley (at) bikewalkkc (dot) org.
