On April 3rd, 2014, aspiring and established authors gathered together at at Thomas Animashaun Street, Coker Aguda Local Council for an event focused on furthering the acceptance of African literature on a global scale. Lagos, Nigeria was home to this premier event, “Conquering the Global Book Market: Starting in Africa.” Attendees consisted of 36 students from six different schools in Coker Aguda council area, 14 Lagos and Anambra state local authors, three politicians, and two academics including representatives from Thisday National Newspaper and Community Magazine.

Top industry professionals in African literature were featured, including the Hon. Habib Adewusi, leader of The House, Coker-Aguda local government Development Area Council, Lagos state, author Emmanuel Emenike, and author Bash Bakr, president of Diamond Pen International and the representative of SBPRA in Africa.

There were many discussions held throughout the event, part of which emphasized the critical issues affecting an author’s success including but not limited to marketing strategies, global publications, and distribution networks. Key topics were strategies to improve book marketing in Nigeria-Africa, SBPRA publishing plans for African authors, empowering the youths through book publication, and the challenges faced by African authors.

Mr. Bakr believes that the goal of this event was achieved and he looks forward to continuing the movement to bring African literature the amount of recognition it deserves. Next on the agenda is to move foreword with more aggressive marketing of SBPRA authors in Nigeria, as well as a visit to Ghana and South Africa later in the year.

“Our destiny is now in our hands,” said Mr. Bakr. “We need to come out from our comfort zones, spread our tentacles and let the world see what Africa is made of.”
