The origins of Slide playing have been traced back to single string African instruments. A Slide can be made of steel, glass, porcelain, ceramic or any flat smooth object and is usually designed to be worn on the finger of the fretting hand. Slide guitar became a staple of the blues guitar sound early on first being recorded in 1923 by Sylvester Weaver. The Slide is pressed against the strings lightly parallel to the frets without touching them to so that pitch can be continuously changed by sliding up and down the fingerboard without touch the frets.

“This is a nice lick that is a staple in your blues repertoire,” says MacLennan. This slide blues lick is in the key of A and Jon demonstrates how to play it as follows; first he slides into the 5th fret on the 2nd string from below and then the 5th fret of the first string three times as triplets using the hybrid picking technique repeated three times. Jon says that the rhythm for this is a blues staple sometimes called “the Texas triplet”. Next Jon descends the scale starting at the 8th fret of the 3rd string to the 7th fret and then to the 5th fret and ending on the 7th fret of the 4th string twice. Jon continues this lesson by performing the lick over a backing track and improvising some additional notes from the minor pentatonic scale. Guitar TAB’s are available for this blues guitar lesson at BluesGuitar.com.
