New Automatic Transfer Switch Power Distribution Unit

There is a new Power Distribution Unit (PDU) out that companies can purchase that is specifically designed for single sourced equipment. This piece will be a great PDU for many companies. It is the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) PDU.

One of the reasons that a lot of companies will want to look into getting this ATS PDU is because it can help keep costs down on the type of equipment that the company needs to purchase. As most companies know, the more power that is pulled the more expensive it is to buy the equipment needed. It is also a good way to use some of the older equipment that some companies might have that only have one power supply. This could include equipment like a switch, a router, a smaller piece of equipment or an older server.

The new ATS PDU has diverse input and single output. This allows companies to utilize all the redundancies of the data center that they are in. When a company plugs their single sourced equipment into this ATS PDU, their equipment is now connected to both an “A” side and a “B” side. (Reference the visual to get a better understanding)

A company is still getting all the redundancies that they need and are only having to plug their equipment into a single outlet. Keep in mind that the data center that a company is in has to have two uninterrupted power supplies (UPS) and diverse power supplies to be able to utilize this ATS PDU. So, a company needs to make sure that if they want to use this ATS PDU that they are checking with the data center they are in to make sure that all of the power requirements are in place.
