The SCE program focuses on heating and cooling efficiency by ensuring that the proper equipment is installed according to the residential or commercial facilities demands. Each heating and cooling unit on the market is designed with specified upper and lower limits of output. When the unit does not suit the building that it is meant to heat or cool, energy is lost due to this imbalance. This lost energy translates to unnecessary energy charges over the life of the system.

The Southern California Edison’s Quality Installation Program is also designed to eliminate issues that negatively affect the efficiency of an air conditioning unit. Some common issues include low airflow, improper refrigerant charge, and duct leakage. An air conditioning system may be installed with one or all of these issues, and the impact on efficiency is cumulative. Each issue adds to the amount of performance that is lost, and this loss of performance leads to an increase in monthly utility bills.

A proper system installation will maximize a heating and cooling system's output while eliminating waste. This is what is required to meet Energy Star compliance. Energy Star is the international standard for energy efficient products. The standard was originally developed in the United States in 1992, but it has since been accepted by many nations around the world.

The SCE's Quality Installation Program ensures that the new installation of a heating and cooling system will meet Energy Star standards by strict adherence to the globally recognized guidelines. Energy Star products have been shown to perform between 20-30% better than federal recommendations.
