Orlando, FL (PRWEB) June 11, 2014
Criminal defense law firm Katz & Phillips, PA announced a new $1,000 scholarship for law students this week, aimed at students who are coping with diabetes.
The Ashley Rose Law Student Scholarship was created in honor of Ashley Rose Katz, the daughter of firm founder David Katz, who was diagnosed with diabetes at just 18 months old. Katz’s wife has also lived with Type I diabetes for 20 years.
“I’m definitely not the only one at this firm who has been affected by diabetes,” said Katz. “This disease is becoming more common and affects millions of people across the country, of all ages.”
Katz & Phillips have become activists for the cause of diabetes research and treatment, hoping that one day there will be a cure. The firm participated as a team in a charity walk for the American Diabetes Association, and sponsored the Dance for Diabetes, a fundraiser and educational event.
Katz says that the firm provides a number of scholarships for law students every year, hoping to encourage a new generation of lawyers. Creating one for students with diabetes seemed like an obvious next step.
“Law school is difficult, and managing diabetes on top of it is only going to make it that much more demanding,” he said. “Providing a scholarship for a deserving law student with diabetes is a way to help level the playing field.”
“What we really want to do is make law school accessible for every promising future lawyer. The Ashley Rose scholarship is just one step toward that.”
Application guidelines are available online.
