Many patients don’t realise they have a problem until they are in pain, some cases are more serious than a simple filling and as a dental professional, I am always eager to find out what new studies are being conducted and the results.

Tariq Drabu was speaking about a recent article published in the Denistry Today website on new evidence which shows that red wine can be beneficial to oral health. The full article can be read here.

Tariq Drabu in Manchester said, “A recent article in the American Chemical Society’s Journey of Agriculture and Food Chemistry has revealed that red wine and grape seed extract could have a positive impact on oral health, reducing the risk of cavities, tooth loss and periodontitis.”

Tariq Drabu went on to say, “Up to ninety percent of the population suffer from tooth loss, cavities and gum disease, resulting from oral bacterial. The research team that conducted the experiment grew bacteria of dental diseases as a biofilm and then dipped it into a number of different liquids, including red wine and grape seed extract with interesting results. The red wine and grape seed extract proved highly effective, which could possibly lead to the development of natural products without the side effects of red wine to help combat dental diseases.”

Tariq Drabu closed in saying, “While the research has shown that red wine does benefit oral health, it should always be enjoyed in moderation. Red wine is brimming with health benefits including a healthy heart, cancer prevention properties and it is filled with antioxidants. It is always exciting to find out about new research developments that show improvements in oral health. Many patients don’t realise they have a problem until they are in pain, some cases are more serious than a simple filling and as a dental professional, I am always eager to find out what new studies are being conducted and the results. It is our desire to help patients have good oral health and if red wine can help combat dental bacteria, then this is an exciting development for the dental industry.”
