Accurately Measures Arrays at a System Level Supporting Advanced Inline Data Services

This specification and the work that follows will clarify how and what is to be measured.

Evaluator Group is releasing the first Solid State Array performance specification, “Measuring Performance for Solid State Arrays,” which provides guidance to IT end users and vendors on the methodology that accounts for SSS and advanced inline data services. Measuring the performance of the new Solid State Storage (SSS) arrays requires new techniques and approaches. Most data sets and data streams generated by current IO generation tools are inadequate to demonstrate actual performance levels.

This specification builds on the SNIA specification released in 2013 that measured raw performance for individual solid state devices (SSD). Measurements for SSS arrays include:

  • Pre-Conditioning
  • Data Reduction technologies (i.e. thin provisioning, compression, deduplication)
  • Capacity Utilization
  • Data Set Size
  • Data Patterning

“Our IT clients rely on real application performance data to make decisions. They have struggled to adequately conduct Proof of Concept tests, as previous methodologies do not adequately measure the SSS array workloads.” said Leah Schoeb, Senior Analyst of Evaluator Group. “This specification and the work that follows will clarify how and what is to be measured.”

Evaluator Group is the analyst leader in promoting real storage performance measurements to better equip IT end users with the information they need to make informed storage decisions. They are also the developer of IOmark, a benchmarking tool that measures storage performance with VDI and VM workloads.

“This test is designed to allow test sponsors to create repeatable, verifiable, and comparable performance results which IT end users can trust for deployments of business critical applications,” said Camberley Bates, Managing Director / Analyst of Evaluator Group. “We are grateful for the broad vendor participation from EMC, HP, IBM, LoadDynamiX, PureStorage and Tegile which provided critiques for this vendor neutral approach.”

Leah Schoeb will be speaking on the test specification and performance measurement at a BrightTALK webinar in conjunction with LoadDynamix on Wednesday, June 11th at 12pm MST. Follow the link to register or view it at your leisure.

Evaluator Group provides a complete set of tools for assistance in product selection. Starting with the Evaluation Guides and Comparison Matrices, IT end users can easily identify their requirements and priorities and compare products. Along with this process, the Evaluator Group analysts assist clients in understanding the unique details and critical considerations, filling in the knowledge gaps or understanding on differences between software products.
