Carbon / Black represents the clever transformation of an existing product that too often ends up in the landfill, into sophisticated, functional storage pieces.

Big Grass, the largest provider of sustainable home and garden décor in Texas, has launched its contemporary Carbon / Black collection, expanding its signature selection of versatile, decorative storage options.
“Carbon / Black represents the clever transformation of an existing product that too often ends up in the landfill, into sophisticated, functional storage pieces,” said John Hanesworth, co-owner of Big Grass. “Handmade in Vietnam from durable recycled rubber tires, Carbon / Black pieces are as suitable for indoor as they are for outdoor use.”
The collection includes shopping totes, planters and storage containers. Sturdy construction and strong handles accommodate items ranging from garden tools and heavy soil to wine bottles, toys, recyclables and laundry. Many pieces are detailed with rugged stitching, brushed aluminum, and steel rivets and fittings.
Each piece in the collection is carefully crafted by hand. For the raw material, rubber tire sidewalls are cleaned and thinned for greater suppleness and flexibility. Then the material is sealed for durability and to enhance the rich ebony color; finally, it is cut, shaped and formed to create the variety of designs.
Carbon / Black’s elemental style offers customers an alternative to Big Grass’s more traditional indoor Mai™ Collection. This line of durable storage baskets and boxes is handmade (removed word "in") from double-woven bamboo skin and bulrush and lined with Thai silk or removable cotton.
“At Big Grass, we recognize the importance of continually introducing new products that combine sustainability and style, whether made from natural materials or recycled ones,” Hanesworth said. "We are always on the lookout for sustainable, handcrafted products that fit into a busy urban lifestyle."
With the introduction of Carbon / Black, Big Grass has also expanded product sourcing into Vietnam. Hanesworth and his wife, Duang, already work directly with multiple producers in Thailand, supporting their generations-old skills turning natural and recycled materials into furnishings, décor and much more.
Many of the artisans Big Grass works with have lacked access to markets to sustain their talents and traditions, so their relationship with Big Grass allows them to set their own prices and earn fair compensation for their talents. For customers, these artisan relationships translate into original, high-quality products at competitive prices.
