SME, an organization that connects people with manufacturing solutions, congratulates SME’s Vice President and Fellow Dean L. Bartles, PhD, FSME, on receiving one of two 2014 Martin K. Starr Excellence in Production and Operations Management Practice Awards from the Production and Operations Management Society, an international professional organization representing the interests of production and operations management professionals.
Bartles, who has been an SME member since 2002, is currently the executive director for the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute. He previously served as vice president of advanced programs and strategic growth for the Ordinance and Tactical Systems Division of General Dynamics Corp.

Molnar, FSME, CMfgE, PE. “His contributions to the field of production and operations management have clearly helped to advance manufacturing, and the Martin K. Starr award appropriately recognizes his efforts.”
Bartles also serves on the industry advisory board of ASME and is chairman emeritus of the boards of directors for both the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining and the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition. Additionally, Bartles currently serves on the boards of directors for the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences, the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME, the MT Connect Institute and the Manufacturing Enterprise Solutions Association.
The Martin K. Starr Excellence in Production and Operations Management Practice Award, one of POMS’ most prestigious awards, was instituted to recognize contributions made to the field of production and operations management by POM practitioners and industry leaders. It is based on exceptional quality of contributions to the POM field and is presented to an individual who has done an exceptional job in making advances in the practice of POM, promoting the profession, making an impact, and building a linkage between industry and academics. This international award is open to all POM practitioners.
