MacLennan’s lesson today is on using triads on the higher strings and incorporating bass notes on the lower strings. Jon demonstrates this technique as follows; first is a G triad constructed as 7th fret of the 3rd string with 2nd finger, 8th fret of the 2nd string with 3rd finger, 7th fret of the first string with 4th finger and then first finger on the 5th fret of the 5th string for the bass note. “Using the fifth in the bass note gives it a really powerful sound,” says MacLennan. Next Jon moves to the four chord which is Am (A minor) and demonstrates this as follows; first finger on the 7th fret of the 5th string for the bass note, 9th fret of the 3rd string with 2nd finger, 10th fret of the 2nd string with 3rd finger and 8th fret of the first string with 4th finger. Next Jon moves to the five chord by simply move that shape up one whole step. Finally Jon ends the progression by playing the first shape starting on the 10th fret for the C Major and then up one whole step for D Major. MacLennan continues by playing variations on this idea.
