"If you have bad breath, see your dentist," Dr. Jivraj said. "If we can’t find an oral cause, then you’ll know to look for a medical one."
Woodland Hills, CA (PRWEB) July 23, 2014
Woodland Hills’ top cosmetic dentists want to alert the 90 million Americans suffering from chronic bad breath that the condition is more than just a nuisance to those with whom they speak.
Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Mamaly Reshad of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute in Oxnard and Woodland Hills, Calif., are concerned that some people may be overlooking an obvious sign of a larger problem.
“Bad breath often is a sign of an infection or chronic disease in the body,” Dr. Reshad said.
Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad want the public to know these six causes of bad breath that are more than dental concerns:
2. Liver disease
3. Respiratory tract infections
4. Chronic bronchitis
5. Acid reflux
6. Chronic dry mouth
“If you have bad breath, see your dentist,” Dr. Jivraj said. “If we can’t find an oral cause, then you’ll know to look for a medical one.”
Studies show that 80 percent of bad breath comes from an oral source. These are the sources that a local dentist can find.
They include cavities and gum disease, food stuck to the tonsils, cracked or loose fillings and dirty dentures.
If a person has bad breath because of oral reasons, they should brush and floss regularly and add an antibacterial mouthwash. Excessive bacteria are bad for your teeth and also can be the culprit for bad breath.
People also should watch what they put in their mouth. Food with a lot of garlic, onion and spices can leave residual odors. Drinking coffee and alcohol can do the same. Avoid sugary gum and breath mints, which temporarily freshen breath but provide sugar on which bacteria feed.
