A Fourth in music refers to the fourth degree of the major scale and is part of the interval group of perfects.
The lick that Jon demonstrates is being played over a Cm7 (C minor seven) chord and starts out with some basic pentatonic phrases that descend downward through the positions. Jon demonstrates them as follows; 8th fret of the first string with first finger, 11th fret of the 2nd string with 3rd finger, 8th fret of the 2nd string with first finger and 10th fret of the 3rd string with 3rd finger. Next position is; 6th fret of the first string with first finger, 8th fret of the 2nd string with 3rd finger, 6th fret of the 2nd string with first finger and 8th fret of the 3rd string with 3rd finger. Next position; 3rd fret of the first string with first finger, 6th fret of the 2nd string with 3rd finger, 4th fret of the 2nd string with 2nd finger and 5th fret of the 3rd string with 3rd finger. Next MacLennan demonstrates what he calls a “hexatonic lick” and follows that with the lick based in fourths. All of this is great for improvising and a great practice tool for any guitarist.
