In recognition for achieving zero Occupational Health and Safety Association (OSHA) recordables in 2013, the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has awarded the Safway Services Laurel, Md. Branch a gold-level Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Award, the highest possible distinction for first year applicants. The award was formally presented to the Laurel Branch in two ceremonies; one held at the ABC Baltimore Chapter on April 30, 2014, and the other at the ABC Metro Washington D.C. Chapter on June 4. Laurel is active in both chapters, and Kim LiPira, the Laurel Branch market development manager, accepted the award on behalf of the company.
“Receiving a STEP Award is a team accomplishment,” said Don Allen, Laurel Branch manager. “Regional Safety Manager Tim Miller, Dallas Luttrell, our construction manager, and Mike Earle, our operations manager, are continuously teaching, correcting and monitoring best practices. But ultimately, the foremen and supervisors in the field deserve the credit for owning our safety culture and disseminating the 10 Life-Saving Rules throughout their crews.”
Miller agrees. “Although we had to have numerous safety and health programs in place to win this award, the Safway Laurel Branch foremen, Faustino Alvardo, Jose Diaz, Rutilio Leon, Louis Rivas and Jose Rosales, along with supervisors Robert Aikens, Lisandro Arriola, Michael Bethea, Nassin Frias, Demetrio Garcia, Kevin Jenkins, Cesar Montilla and Jose Umana are the ones who are really responsible for this accomplishment.”
