Marieta Milev is taking a page from the likes of Penny Marshall, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston. The Bulgarian born Hollywood actress will be making her much-anticipated directorial debut later this fall.
For the first time in her career, Milev is going to write, direct and star in the same film, which currently has the working title of “Monica.”
“I am extremely excited about Monica”, says Milev. “It is quite overwhelming to be writing, directing and acting, all at the same time, but this is what I was born to do and I couldn’t be happier about this project.”
The movie takes place in Sicily, Italy during the 1950’s, and chronicles the life of a beautiful, bold Italian woman (named Monica) who walks a fine line between the feminist and anti-feminist movements.
The character Monica, played by Milev, is perceived as very audacious and dauntless when it comes to her interaction with members of the opposite sex. Many believe that her behavior with and towards men is too provocative and in some cases, completely inappropriate. As a result, Monica is shunned by society and labeled as improper by the townsfolk.
As the creator of the film, Milev is hoping that people will recognize just how brave and courageous Monica’s character was, and how much criticism and ridicule she endured.
“I am doing this movie because I admire Italian beauty very much,” says Milev. “I think that bold beauty in conservative society is very rare nowadays. People are so open minded today that it’s really hard to be shocked or surprised by anything or anyone.”
It is safe to say that being an Italian woman in the 1950’s with no filter, no boundaries, living in an extremely conservative society, was quite taboo. Which makes Milev’s message all the more potent.
“I want to show the beauty of a different culture in a different time,” says Milev. "Yet, at the same time, I want to show the same extreme emotions of love, disappointment, forgiveness and mental escape, that we feel today.”
Famous Italian actor, Alessandro Nori, who is the film’s co-star, is also co-writing the film with Milev. “I am happy to have such an amazing lead like Alessandro”, says Milev. “I am very excited to get started on this amazing film.” Production for the film “Monica” is slated to begin in September.
