NEW YORK (PRWEB) July 18, 2014
Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick, former Senior Associate Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, to serve as Chair of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary. Ciparick serves as co-chair of the Appellate Practice at the international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, where she is of counsel in New York.
Among its many important responsibilities, the Committee recruits, screens, and nominates highly qualified candidates for appointment to the Family Court and Criminal Court of New York City, as well as the Civil Court for interim appointments. Based on the Committee’s nominations, the Mayor makes appointments to these courts.
“Our courts can only function fairly and efficiently when the right judges are on the bench. It is an honor to be able to use my years of experience in New York’s judicial system to help select candidates who are right for the job and up to the task,” Ciparick said.
“Carmen represents exceptional quality, integrity, diversity and the values that make our country and our city so great. She is a role model for excellence and character in our profession, has a long history of service and commitment to the people of New York and we are proud she is a member of our firm,” said Richard A. Rosenbaum, chief executive officer of Greenberg Traurig.
Ciparick is a former New York State Court of Appeals Associate Judge. She spent 19 years on New York State’s highest court and 15 years on the trial bench. She was appointed on December 1, 1993 by Governor Mario M. Cuomo and re-appointed by Governor Eliot Spitzer in November 2007. During her tenure on the Court of Appeals, she wrote some of the most significant decisions of the past two decades, carefully navigating complex issues from school funding and the separation of church and state to the death penalty. In total, she wrote the majority opinion for the court in 322 cases, 62 dissents and 7 concurring opinions.
Maintaining her dedication to public service, Ciparick recently was appointed to co-chair the New York Justice Task Force - which examines the causes of wrongful convictions - as well as serving on the Chief Judge’s Task Force to Expand Access to Civil Legal Services, the New York State/Federal Judicial Council, and the Institute on Professionalism and the Law. Among her many accolades, she received The New York Law Journal’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.
Ciparick started her career as a staff attorney with the Legal Aid Society in New York City. She left in 1969 and became an Assistant Counsel for the Judicial Conference of the State of New York. Ciparick then served as Chief Law Assistant of the Criminal Court of the City of New York and Counsel in the Office of the New York City Administrative Judge. In 1978, she was appointed Judge of the Criminal Court of the City of New York, and in 1982 was elected to the New York State Supreme Court.
