Cincinnati-based telecommunications company Powernet will be the official Wi-Fi provider of the Western & Southern Open taking place August 9-17 in Mason, OH, 20 miles north of Cincinnati. All of the nearly 200,000 tournament attendees will have free and unlimited Wi-Fi access in the food court and hospitality center areas of the Lindner Family Tennis Center, the host site of the event.
“This is one of the most highly attended sporting events in the Midwest,” says Allison Stevens, Powernet CEO. “I can’t think of a better place to showcase our Wi-Fi solution and what we as a company are capable of, not to mention we’re providing a service anyone who’s been to a sporting event can certainly appreciate.”
Powernet will provide Wi-Fi coverage to the food court and hospitality areas non-stop for the duration of the nine-day event. This year’s tournament will be the first sponsored by Powernet and the first to offer free Wi-Fi access to fans. It’s a relationship Stevens hopes to continue.
“We have high expectations of ourselves and the tournament. The Western & Southern Open has a long, rich tradition, and we want to be a part of that for many years to come,” she says.
In addition to providing Wi-Fi, Powernet will also have a station on-site next to the outdoor broadcast studio where the Tennis Channel and ESPN2 will operate from all week. The setup, which is also adjacent to the Grandstand Court, will provide tablets for use by fans to catch up on scores or stats, or just to browse the web.
News of the sponsorship comes on the back end of a summer of development for Powernet’s Wi-Fi solution, with new projects in the works to provide service to local schools in addition to their usual business clientele.
“It’s been a busy few months for sure, but the opportunity to work so closely with such a prestigious event and contribute to the fan experience in such a big way is something our whole team is excited about,” Stevens says.
The Western & Southern Open will feature the top stars from the ATP World Tour and WTA, one of only five places in the world outside of the grand slams where the top men and top women play at the same venue during the same week.
