The online divorce experts at MyDivorcePapers.com (MDP) realize that it can be hard for couples to remain civil after the documents are finalized. Even when there is relatively low conflict, the bad feelings and ill will are still there. This reality has led MDP to share these tips on how to cope. Here's what they recommend.
Tip one: Never share dislike for an ex with the kids.
MDP points out that while you may feel anger and resentment toward your ex after the divorce papers are final, that person is your child's "mommy or daddy." An attack on one's ex serves as an inadvertent attack on the child as well. "Children are proud of their parents, especially in the beginning, and they value the qualities that they inherit from both of you. By lashing out about your ex, you're attacking those qualities, and that can lead to the child feeling inadequate," a MDP rep explained.
Tip two: Find a sounding board.
Once you or your ex has decided to file for divorce, it may be too tempting to blast your ex every chance you get, MDP notes. However, there is a time, place, and person right for such release. Explains the representative: "Just because you can't share those feelings with a child, that doesn't mean you can't share them with someone. In fact, you probably should. Getting your grievances out in the open removes them from your body, so they no longer get to contaminate you with negativity. You should turn to a sounding board, or confidante, who will allow you to vent without offering you destructive advice."
Tip three: Build something new.
MDP acknowledges that it can be healthy to vent your anger in healthy ways; however, a continual dwelling on the past keeps one from building a successful future. "If you want to get through the divorce and on to something better, then you've got to start building it for yourself, one day at a time," the rep said. "You cannot complain and avenge your way to happiness."
