Hauppauge-based Axis Construction, Inc., premier provider of construction management, design-build and general contracting services, partnered with a team of professionals that designed and built South Nassau Communities Hospital Urgent Care Center at Long Beach. This vital project, led by Andrew Triolo, Assistant Vice President of Design, Development and Construction at South Nassau Communities Hospital, restored emergency medical services to Long Beach after Superstorm Sandy flooded Long Beach Medical Center in October 2012 and left local residents without a hospital. The new facility opened recently at 325 East Bay Drive, at the corner of Monroe Blvd just west of the former Long Beach Medical Center.

“Axis is so very proud to have been part of this team and one of the instruments in the success of the project,” said Axis Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Peter Cannuscio. “The accelerated nature of this project warranted a continuous oversight process. South Nassau and the team arranged for a briefing at 7:30 am every day, which proved to be the true testament to the concept of teamwork. As each challenge or issue presented itself, the team pulled together to find a solution. “

The new $3.9 million urgent care center is a 4,7000 square-foot modular unit that was shipped from Raleigh, North Carolina that was field erected and fit out upon its arrival under the management and direction of Axis. It includes 10 private examination rooms, two procedure rooms, and radiology imaging and laboratory suites. Time was of the essence as Axis and the South Nassau team focused on the need to expedite the construction process and bring medical services back to Long Beach. Many regulatory, town and county approvals were required for various phases of the project, which were obtained without delay due to early communications by the project team to the appropriate agencies. Keenly aware of the community’s great need for this facility, the effort peaked with approximately 70 tradespeople working multiple shifts, seven days a week to complete the project within the short month period allowed.
