According to Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, “If there be time to expose through discussion the falsehood and fallacies, to avert the evil by the processes of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence.” Wanting to spread better understanding of the word “Nigger’” in a more factual than emotional prism, author Shane Bell releases “The Word Nigger: from a White Southern Male” (published by Xlibris).
When spoken, written, or heard, the word “Nigger” has the power to ignite an emotionally charged encounter between people. Some state laws deem the word “Nigger” a “fighting word,” and other states consider it a “mere word.” Trying to understand the anxieties that surround the word “Nigger” from an American viewpoint is a confusing social labyrinth of emotional ideologies. Therefore, Bell uses his publication to dissect all reasons and provide a much more understandable conclusion as to what is the current impact the ‘n word’ has to all concerned.
“The ways Western society has used this word in language, writing, film, and forms of popular media is set in the foundation of American history. No matter how a person views this word’s placement in relation to today’s frame of intellect, our modern knowledge of the word “Nigger” is forever tethered to the history of the American slave system,” Bell says. “The meaning and spelling of “Nigger” can change, but the origin of this word as an American construct will not.”
Today’s Americans have a troubled history of emotion and change regarding this word. However, Bell asserts that readers and citizens should take the word — in all its sense, bar the emotional — for the definitions will continue to change and evolve over time. Strictly based on facts, rather than emotion, “The Word Nigger:from a White Southern Male” is aimed toward anyone trying to educate himself or herself on the word “Nigger” and its current notion.
