Safway Hammond Branch Receives Zero Injury Safety Award
WAUKESHA, Wis. (PRWEB) September 08, 2014 -- The Safway Hammond Branch crew working on the unit 14 and 15 upgrade projects, at R.M. Schahfer Generating Station, in Wheatfield, Ind., received the National Maintenance Agreement Policy Committee’s (NMAPC) Bronze Star Zero Injury Safety Award (ZISA). This recognition was awarded after crew members completed more than 200,000 hours worked with zero OSHA recordable incidents.
“We have worked really hard to instill a culture of safety on the jobsite,” said project Foreman Larry Fugett. “Making sure the right safety leaders were in place was essential. The leadership team’s ability to be the front line of safety and to work closely with employees was paramount. Through our commitment to making safety personal for each crew member, we have fostered a strong sense of trust and camaraderie amongst employees. Every individual here takes safe work practices seriously and has adopted a zero tolerance mentality. This award is a testament to our commitment to safety.”
To receive this award contractor’s projects must have zero incidents. Any projects performed in which days away, restricted or transferred (DART) cases, fatalities, or any OSHA recordable has occurred are not eligible to receive the award. Each ZISA applicant must undergo an in-depth audit and vetting process where clients are contacted to verify that there are no recordable injuries. In addition, contractors need to display strong safety principles in the workplace to be eligible for a ZISA. According to the NMAPC website, “Basic to the Zero Injury Philosophy and common among these contractors is the view that no injury is treated as an acceptable event in the execution of the work. These contractors also have a commitment that they will do whatever it takes to prevent the next injury. In short, it is their performance expectation that there will be no injuries and line managers and workers alike are so informed.”
“Winning this award showcases our commitment to being not only the best, but also the safest company in our industry,” says Steve Weron, Midwest regional vice president. “We believe that all workplace injuries are preventable. Our employees are committed to a zero recordables philosophy in the workplace. We look forward to the challenge of working toward a Gold Star ZISA, only awarded to contractors with one million, or more, hours worked with zero recordables.”
Safway will officially accept the award at a ZISA Gala, which will be held on Oct. 23, 2014, at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
