San Diego, CA (PRWEB) September 22, 2014
Seven uninsured community members will have life-changing surgeries performed pro bono thanks to a partnership between the San Diego County Medical Society Foundation (SDCMSF) and Surgery One’s Otay Lakes Surgery Center.
Orthopedist Michael Lenihan MD, will perform two knee scopes and an ACL repair for three uninsured patients. General Surgeon Stephen Summers, MD will provide hernia repairs and a lipoma removal for four uninsured patients.
At least 15 volunteer medical personnel will also donate their time and expertise to perform the procedures. Surgeries will be performed at the Surgery One’s http://www.surgeryone.com/center/otay-lakes-surgery-center Otay Lakes Surgery Center located at 955 Lane Ave # 100, Chula Vista, CA 91914.
Adela is one of the uninsured patients who will be receiving a procedure on Saturday. Adela works full time as a line cook at a taco shop and has been experiencing pain in her left knee for more than a year. She has become accustomed to keeping her knee as straight as possible because the pain is worse when she bends it. After an eight hour shift, her knee pain is almost unbearable.
The pain is so great, it has begun to affect her job performance and she is afraid she will be unable to work soon. Adela’s primary care provider at Family Health Center referred her to SDCMSF and she will receive a knee scope on Saturday to finally determine the cause of her pain. If additional treatment is needed, case managers at SDCMSF will coordinate that for her. “I am so grateful,” says Adela. “I want everyone to know how very appreciative I am of everyone’s time and generosity. Thank you.”
SDCMSF Project Access San Diego has been operating since 2008 providing life-changing health care to more than 2,500 San Diego residents. “Our patients are our community’s most vulnerable,” says SDCMSF Executive Director Barbara Mandel. “We could not help patients regain their health without the partnership with Surgery One and Otay Lakes Surgery Center.”
Scott Leggett, CEO of Surgery One said, “We’ve been supporting the efforts of Project Access for many years and are grateful to our physicians, anesthesiologists and staff who donate their time to ensure the success of this critical community outreach program that addresses critical medical needs. With their support, we’re able to transform the lives of patients in need and restore them to an active, productive life” http://www.surgeryone.com/about
