The Fisher House Foundation depends on the generosity of its volunteers to support their fundraising efforts. Fisher House Foundation’s comfort homes, located at major military bases and VA medical centers, enable family members to be close to a loved one during hospitalization.
Team Fisher House is the fundraising community of the Fisher House Foundation, and Military Connection has been a proud supporter and media sponsor. The program was started in 2006 by Cathy Cabrey and Stacy Toner, two Army spouses who share a passion for running and supporting military families. Team Fisher house places equal emphasis on raising awareness as it does on raising funds. When you join Team Fisher House, you become a Champion for military families.
“It is our honor to work with Team Fisher House, assisting them in furthering their outreach in both the military and civilian communities,” said Military Connection CEO Debbie Gregory. She continued, “Runners can work on their fitness while raising money for a great cause. But there are plenty of volunteer opportunities for non-runners as well.”
Knowing that a family’s love is the best medicine, Fisher Houses strive to give recovering service members a sense of community during a stressful time. There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center, providing the comforts of home in a supportive environment. The houses usually accommodate 16 to 42 family members. Each house is decorated and furnished, and comes complete with a kitchen, laundry facilities, spacious dining room and a living room. They have even remembered the toys for the children. The newer homes are 100% handicap accessible and include elevators.
Over the last 14 years, Fisher House has offered more than three million days of lodging to more than 160,000 families, with no family ever paying for their stay. In addition to constructing new houses, the Fisher House Foundation continues to support existing Fisher Houses and help individual military families in need. MilitaryConnection.com commends Team Fisher House.
About Team Fisher House
Military spouses Cathy Cabrey and Stacy Toner became running buddies to help deal with the stress of having their husbands deployed in Iraq. In early 2006, after a particularly inspirational run, Cathy presented the idea of a military spouse team at the Marine Corps Marathon team to Fisher House; the Foundation was immediately on board. When Cathy called Stacy and asked her to coach this grassroots team, Stacy didn’t hesitate for a moment to say “yes.” The Team Fisher House program was born, turning miles into money for the troops. Team Fisher House includes experienced runners, first-timers and volunteers alike.
