What I hope children and adults will take away from this book are the importance of family, friendship, loyalty, honesty and having a sense of humor.

Jeri-Anne Agee has always felt a connection with classic children’s book characters like Ramona Quimby and Junie B. Jones. An avid reader and mother of three, Agee retired early from the financial industry and, at the age of 44, began writing her first children’s book. Her quest to combine her own stories of growing up in the South with a character who is strong, lovable, loyal and funny resulted in Birdie Mae Hayes.
In Agee’s new book, “The Life and Times of Birdie Mae Hayes: Friends Forever,” Birdie Mae has a familiar yet terrible feeling come over her and she knows there is nothing she can do about. For as long as she can remember, she has been able to tell when something bad is about to happen. What transpires next is every third-grader’s nightmare.
“My father has called me Birdie Mae my entire life and a lot of things in this book and the books to come are based on actual events in my life and events in my children’s lives,” Agee said. “It touches on something both children and adults can relate to. I’m not sure if anyone has written a children’s book about someone laughing so hard they wet their pants at school, but we all know it happens.”
The author recalls her elementary school years, as she was just learning to read and how she thirsted for knowledge. Agee’s chapter books were created with those young, middle-grade readers in mind as she hopes to inspire children to adopt a passion for the art of reading.
Agee said, “What I hope children and adults will take away from this book are the importance of family, friendship, loyalty, honesty and having a sense of humor.”
