A panel of industry-recognized judges selected the finalists from more than 250 nominations.

With nominations increasingly more competitive with each passing year, being named a finalist in the Global Energy Awards program – now in its 16th year – is no small feat

Tollgrade Communications, Inc., the industry leader in redefining the global standard for reliability at the world’s largest electric utilities and telecommunications providers, announced today that it has been named a finalist in the Platts Global Energy Awards, an annual program recognizing exemplary industry leadership. The 2014 finalists were selected from nearly 250 nominations and were announced this week by program host Platts, a leading global provider of energy, petrochemicals, metals and agriculture information. This is the second consecutive year Tollgrade has been recognized by Platts as a Global Energy Award “Rising Star” finalist.

Tollgrade is being recognized for its LightHouse® platform, which allows utilities to fortify the resiliency of their grid with Medium Voltage Sensors and Predictive Grid® Analytics software, providing real-time grid intelligence from the distribution grid; the network that delivers electricity to millions of consumers and where 90% of power outages occur. This part of the grid is largely unmonitored and spans over six million miles in the U.S alone – that’s like going to the moon 13 times and back. With Tollgrade, utilities can affordably retrofit their grid with LightHouse sensors to improve reliability across the millions of miles of unmonitored lines by communicating real-time grid health data back to their crews and significantly reducing a utility’s operational expenses.

“With nominations increasingly more competitive with each passing year, being named a finalist in the Global Energy Awards program – now in its 16th year – is no small feat,” said Platts President Larry Neal. “We look forward to announcing the winners in December and honoring the accomplishments of winners and finalists, alike.”

Established in 1999 and often described as “the Oscars” of the energy industry, the Platts Global Energy Awards highlight corporate and individual innovation, leadership and performance excellence in 18 categories spanning the energy complex.

“We are honored to be selected by the Platts judges as a finalist in the Rising Star category for the second year in a row. Recognition from Platts is a very important milestone for Tollgrade and carries a tremendous amount of credibility in our industry,” said Edward H. Kennedy, CEO and President, Tollgrade Communications. “We have seen tremendous momentum and demand for our LightHouse platform in the U.S., U.K. and Brazil and would be excited to share this award with our customers.”

The LightHouse platform is unique because it combines highly accurate sensor technology with Predictive Grid analytics software to classify grid conditions and assess network health. LightHouse Sensors are deployed at substations and along feeders to identify, locate and troubleshoot the leading causes of power outages. Tollgrade’s Predictive Grid Analytics software combines a library of fault events, accurate outage detection and time synchronized load planning data in one package to provide the intelligence needed to restore outages faster and better understand the cause of outages on the distribution network. Within the software, customizable rules can be defined to alert utilities to inefficient operating conditions, subtle system failures, or indications of anomalous behavior that are early indications of future large-scale outages. During an outage, visualization tools pinpoint locations to reduce drive and restoration times.

Tollgrade has received over ten awards for the LightHouse platform since the beginning of 2013. Earlier this year, Tollgrade made a “Commitment to Action” at the Clinton Global Initiatives America meeting to “Build a Predictive Grid for the Motor City,” using their LightHouse platform. This commitment was featured on stage during the closing plenary session moderated by President Bill Clinton.
