It’s all about education. Most business owners simply don’t know very much about Development Disabilities and because of that will not hire an adult that has a diagnosis.

During this month, which is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has teamed up with Best Buddies founder Anthony Shriver to kick off a new campaign that will support the hiring of those with Developmental Disabilities, including those diagnosed with Down Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and other special needs.
Ryan Platt, Founder of A Special Needs Plan and creator of Special Needs Knowledge, is excited about this program. “When a portion of our society has an unemployment rate of 85%, like adults with a Development Disability [according to National Core Indicators], it takes a concerted effort from those in the private sector with the ability and wherewithal to make a real dent in that number.”
“The ‘I’m in to Hire’ campaign is challenging all of us around the world to open our minds and consider people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as qualified, dependable, employable candidates. These individuals are dedicated, skilled workers and it is clear that their involvement in the economic activity is relevant for all of society,” Slim said.
Ryan Platt states, “It’s all about education. Most business owners simply don’t know very much about Development Disabilities and because of that will not hire an adult that has a diagnosis. I hope this campaign is able to provide this education because employers are missing out on great workers.”
A report released by the Institute for Corporate Productivity indicates that most employers who hired people with developmental disabilities reported having a positive experience. What’s more, the majority of employers found workers with disabilities to be highly motivated, the report said.
