Velarde has significantly contributed to BaseHealth's success by refining its business model, defining its target market segments, and building a commercial pipeline.
Redwood City, CA (PRWEB) October 20, 2014
BaseHealth, the maker of the world’s first comprehensive health management platform, today announced Jorge Velarde as CEO and President. Before being named CEO and President, he served as Interim CEO and Senior Vice President of Business Development and Marketing at BaseHealth. Velarde joined the company after more than 10 years at Illumina Inc., where he served as Vice President of Business Development.
The decision to name Velarde as CEO and President comes as a result of the growing demand for integrated genomic analysis in the health management of individuals and patient populations, coupled with Velarde’s extensive business development experience in the life sciences industry. Since BaseHealth’s launch in April, Velarde has significantly contributed to the organization’s success by refining its business model, defining its target market segments, and building a commercial pipeline.
Prior to joining BaseHealth, Velarde spent more than a decade with Illumina, the industry leader in genomic sequencing, where he played a key role in the company’s significant expansion. Prior to Illumina, he was integral to the business development efforts at Gen-Probe. Velarde helped established profitable partnerships and helped to develop an extensive portfolio of customers that built Gen-Probe into a leading diagnostics company. The company was acquired by Hologic, Inc. in 2012.
“I see incredible potential in BaseHealth’s ability to make personalized health management available to anyone,” said Jorge Velarde, CEO and President of BaseHealth. “My goal is to inspire users to be well, promote healthy behaviors and reduce the occurrence of preventable diseases through the use of our comprehensive and collaborative health management platform.”
BaseHealth’s platform leverages genomic data alongside clinical and behavioral analysis to provide personalized, evidence-based health assessments in collaboration with a user’s physician or health coach.
Following six months of product validation with a beta group of 40 physicians and their patients, BaseHealth is now scaling the platform by building a robust pipeline of potential customers and partners including health plans, large physician groups, and accountable care organizations.
“Addressing the needs of the market and building a scientifically sound product that makes personalized care possible has been our focus from day one. I am excited to see the BaseHealth platform deployed at scale under Jorge’s guidance,” said Hossein Fakhrai-Rad, Ph.D, Chairman of the Board, Chief Scientific Officer, and former CEO. “Jorge’s expertise is perfectly suited to lead the company as BaseHealth moves into the next stage of growth with an emphasis on improving population health.”
Fakhrai-Rad will transition to the role of Chief Scientific Officer where he will oversee the continued, rigorous scientific development and testing of the BaseHealth platform.
“The BaseHealth platform has significantly improved my patients’ understanding of their overall risk for common complex diseases and their ability to visualize how personal genetic variations and lifestyle factors contribute to their individual risk of preventable disease. It’s also given me a meaningful way of collaborating with my patients to help them mitigate those risks and stay healthy,” said Dr. Rezaee, Chief Medical Officer at BaseHealth. “Using the platform to track population health as a whole will reveal new insights and trends, increasing the benefits exponentially.”
