Michelin Star eatery, The Terrace Restaurant - one of only three Michelin Star establishments in the county and the only Michelin Star in the New Forest National Park - has successfully retained its Michelin Star status for 2015.

The restaurant, part of the Montagu Arms Hotel, has also made the finals for two honours at the Hampshire Life Food & Drink Awards; ‘Best Hampshire Menu’ and ‘Chef of the Year’ for Head Chef Matthew Tompkinson.

The winners are announced at the end of November at the Elvetham Hotel in Hampshire. However the celebrations don’t stop there either with the restaurant also ranking #57 in the Sunday Times’ ‘Top 100 UK Restaurants’ of 2014.

Head Chef Matt is very pleased with the restaurant’s latest achievements, “The Michelin Star experience isn’t just about the food we prepare, it’s the whole package; the food, the staff, the location, the atmosphere.

“The team work very hard to ensure our guests receive first class service in all areas so retaining the star and receiving recognition from awards and the media is brilliant.”

With menus starting at just £22.50 for a two course lunch, The Terrace boasts an elegant, romantic atmosphere with food carefully prepared by Head Chef, Matthew Tomkinson and his team.

Matthew’s philosophy is to create fresh, beautifully cooked, simple foods. He believes that free-range, organic produce is not just better because of its purity and freedom from additives, but because it tastes better too. “The New Forest is my larder and what a larder it is!” he states.

Matthew interprets the restaurant’s cuisine in a modern and refined way, capturing a delicious and exciting range of flavours, textures and aromas. The menu focuses on seasonal ingredients sourced from carefully selected local suppliers and from the hotel’s very own Kitchen Garden.

Matthew started out working in the kitchen of a local pub before taking on a degree in Hospitality Management. After completing his degree he moved through a variety of restaurants including 4 years as Chef de Partie at Ockenden Manor.

After successfully winning the Roux scholarship Matt went on to win a Michelin Star as Head Chef at The Goose in Oxfordshire. The Montagu Arms’ awards and accolades are testament to Matthew’s exemplary culinary skills.
