Software training firm Infinite Skills Inc. this week introduced its "Learning Windows PowerShell Tutorial," an introductory course designed for network administrators interested in learning the basics of this powerful framework for administering and automating a Windows network.

Windows PowerShell consists of a command-line shell and a scripting language, both built on the .NET framework, enabling administrators to perform tasks on both local and remote systems. Its importance in Windows administration is on the rise as the framework's features become more powerful and dynamic.

Infinite Skills' "Learning Windows PowerShell" starts with basic setup and configuration and introduces the fundamentals of major components, including commands, scripts, working with providers, files and folders, and administrative processes.

Course author Mark Long is a trainer, consultant, and technical writer specializing in information technology. He has worked in IT for more than 30 years, with 18 years at BellSouth, where he worked as a trainer, developer, network architect and administrator, and data security specialist. He has also worked for large companies and organizations including the US Air Force, Rockwell International, and Mercedes-Benz, among others.

Following the setup tutorials, Long teaches essential shell commands, classes, and objects, along with the essentials of writing PowerShell scripts.

He then explains how PowerShell works with providers and performs read/write tasks on folders and files.

The course closes with a look at administrative processes and a chapter covering the major features of PowerShell 5.

"Make no mistake," Long says, "PowerShell is the future of administration in the Windows Operating System. There is a lot to PowerShell, but you have to learn how to get around."

"This course will walk you through the very basics of PowerShell from square one. It will help you get started and take those first steps."
