This is the first time the advanced 3-D heart mapping system was used in the tri-county region.

At St. Elizabeth, we continuously strive to reach higher standards of excellence in care and we are committed to providing the most advanced tools using the least invasive methods to allow doctors to find and treat problems quickly.

Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, completed an atrial fibrillation ablation Nov. 17 using an advanced 3-D heart mapping system developed by Topera Inc. This is the first time this new technology has been used in the tri-county region.

During the procedure Lee Gemma, M.D., and Allen Amorn, M.D., cardiac electrophysiologists at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, performed FIRM-Guided Therapy to aid in the treatment of a patient with a serious heart rhythm disorder or atrial fibrillation (AFib). AFib is the most common heart rhythm disorder, affecting millions of Americans. It is a common source of palpitations, dizziness, stroke and death.

Topera’s 3-D mapping system allowed Drs. Gemma and Amorn to identify sources sustaining the arrhythmia specific to the patient. They were then able to use this information to determine immediately how best to deliver therapy. The patient did well, and long-term outcome is expected to be excellent, the physicians report.

“St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital is a leader in northeast Ohio, providing the best and most advanced therapies for patients with heart disease such as AFib,” observes Don Koenig, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Mercy Health Youngstown. “We are very excited to provide the Topera diagnostic technology to improve outcomes for our patients, a key part of our mission to our community.”

“Every day, new technologies pave the way for better outcomes and improved quality of life for heart patients,” adds Mariann Pacak, director of heart and vascular services. “At St. Elizabeth, we continuously strive to reach higher standards of excellence in care and we are committed to providing the most advanced tools using the least invasive methods to allow doctors to find and treat problems quickly.

“Medical evidence demonstrates that arrhythmia procedures with Topera can be performed with a high degree of safety and clinical efficacy. Patients return to routine activities rapidly,” she continues. “This new standard in cardiac care has allowed us to achieve quality outcomes along with an exceptional level of patient satisfaction.”
