YLighting, known for its selection of premier designs from leading international brands, shares the fascinating stories of some of the most iconic modern lighting fixtures. From the industrial origins of the Saucer Lamp, to the bamboo-cane inspiration for the Twiggy, YLighting uncovers the little-known facts behind these classic creations.
- Louis Poulsen’s PH 5 was designer Poul Hennigsen’s attempt to “tame electrical light” and eliminate visual glare, which he accomplished with three reflecting shades. Half the homes in Denmark feature a PH 5 and it even appeared on a postage stamp.
- George Nelson’s Saucer Lamp was inspired by a photograph Nelson saw in the New York Times of ships being covered in netting and self-webbing plastic for storage. He located a manufacturer of the self-webbing spray and tested a plastic-covered light that turned into the Saucer Lamp, a classic to this day.
- One of Britain’s most identifiable designs, the original Anglepoise was created in 1932 by an automotive suspension engineer who developed a spring that would remain perfectly in position after being moved. Famed industrial designer Sir Kenneth Grange’s update, the Type 75 Anglepoise, appears in the Bond film Skyfall in the MI 6 headquarters.
