American Consumer Credit Counseling Releases Survey on Love and Money

Monthly survey from national nonprofit explores consumers’ financial fidelity and communication with their significant other when it comes to money issues.

Today, national consumer credit counseling agency, American Consumer Credit Counseling, launched their monthly online survey seeking to gain better insight into consumers’ behavior when it comes to love and money. The survey, which can be found online at ACCC’s website, poses questions on the topic of financial fidelity, communication between couples and how money affects relationships.

In a 2013 study from Kansas State University, money was found to be a leading source of arguments between couples and, in many cases, was the primary culprit in ending marriages. In fact, one study conducted in 2009 by Utah State University found that couples who reported disagreeing about finances once a week were over 30 percent more likely to get divorced than couples who reported disagreeing about finances a few times a month.

“When ignored, money and personal finance issues can result in resentment and animosity between partners,” said Steve Trumble, President and CEO of American Consumer Credit Counseling. “Couples need to remember that saying ‘I do’ means that you and your significant other now share one another’s financial history – both the good and the bad. Communication, honesty and scheduling time to discuss money and personal finances are all steps that couples should take both before tying the knot and throughout the entire marriage.”

The Love and Money survey is the latest in a series of online polls from ACCC that seek to gain additional insight into consumer’s behavior when it comes to financial literacy, spending habits and other personal finance and consumer issues. The poll will be hosted online until February 6th at which time results will be analyzed and released in time for Valentine’s Day.
