We are a high-end, boutique video company, and we use resources wisely. M&S will get a huge bang for their buck from this Super Bowl commercial. The value is that the ad will get a lot of talk—good or bad.

Gearshift Productions, owned by Jim Folliard, debuted its first Super Bowl commercial on Sunday. Created for Michael & Son, a regional heating, cooling, and plumbing company, Gearshift produced a humorous ad that viewed like a movie trailer, simulating a national security crisis where M&S comes to President Obama’s rescue. Using an Obama look-alike, Gearshift shot most of the commercial at Madame Tussauds, a wax museum in Washington D.C., utilizing the museum’s replica of the oval office and podium for props.

“A year ago,” says Folliard, who also serves as Gearshift’s head videographer, “Michael & Son started a new campaign with the jingle-like slogan, ‘If you can’t, we can.’ Gearshift incorporated this familiar jingle into M&S’s Super Bowl commercial.” Folliard goes on to say, “The goal was to create a 30-second spot to provide brand recognition for Michael & Son. We wanted to do that with humor and by making the ad campy enough to be consistent with M&S’s other ads.”

Folliard, who’s worked in videography for 25 years, pointed out that the commercial was a custom project. “We don’t do cookie cutter projects when it comes to commercials and marketing videos. We realized the customer’s vision, went through five or six revisions using different phrases and music, and produced a commercial that is original and will keep viewers guessing until the end.”

Folliard said the client loved the commercial. “Although we’re not a movie production studio,” he says, “we are a high-end, boutique company, and we use resources wisely. M&S will get a huge bang for their buck from this Super Bowl commercial. The value is that the ad will get a lot of talk—good or bad.”
