Affinis Global, an international consulting firm founded by a former senior White House official and a serial Silicon Valley entrepreneur, announced today the opening of Affinis Labs, a Northern Virginia startup incubator that supports marketplace solutions to global social, economic, and political challenges.
The inaugural cohort of companies targets the 500-million strong global Muslim youth market with innovative goods & services that enhance identity and help counter violent extremism. Later this year, Affinis Labs will incubate additional start-ups with other social and national security applications, such as combating human trafficking and empowering young entrepreneurs in conflict zones.
Affinis Global also announced the formation of Affinis Funds, a series of private equity funds to catalyze start-ups that can help solve global challenges. An initial $5 million fund will support start-ups with potential to counter violent extremism.
“We’re building a startup ecosystem to catalyze a new generation of creative private sector solutions to some of the world’s most complex challenges,” said Quintan Wiktorowicz, managing partner at Affinis Global and co-founder of Affinis Labs. The ecosystem includes, in addition to Affinis Labs and Affinis Funds, a series of global hackathons to generate innovative ideas and prototypes around social and security issues.
“We are excited about bringing together untapped, innovative talent and providing them with the funding, mentorship, and market connections they need to get off the ground,” explains Shahed Amanullah, co-founder of Affinis Labs. “We see enormous market needs as well as opportunities to use market forces to generate significant social good.”
