Some acceptable qualifying events include losing coverage from a job, getting married, having a baby, or moving out of state. However, other qualifying events might not be so easy to identify.

Allred Insurance, a premier independent insurance agency that has been serving North Carolina businesses and individuals since 1977, is currently offering private consultations and signup assistance for the Special Enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act. During these consultations, Allred agents will help insurance seekers determine if they meet the minimum eligibility requirements for national healthcare enrollment outside the Open Enrollment period, and then provide further aid as necessary with plan selection and application submission.

“Now that the Open Enrollment deadline has passed, the only way individuals can purchase healthcare through the national marketplace is if they’ve had a qualifying event,” explains Allred Insurance spokesman Scott Allred. “Some acceptable qualifying events include losing coverage from a job, getting married, having a baby, or moving out of state. If prospective clients have experienced any of those things, the process for acquiring healthcare outside of Open Enrollment is fairly straightforward.”

However, other qualifying events might not be so easy to identify. Dubbed “complicated cases” by the Healthcare.gov website, they include a multitude of special circumstances ranging from natural disasters to misinformation, system errors, Medicaid transfers, and more.

“Because of all these exceptions and complicated cases, many individuals may still be eligible to purchase insurance without even realizing it,” Allred says. “That’s why it’s so important for uninsured consumers to sit down with an Allred agent to discuss their particular situation. Our agents are trained to ask the right questions to help consumers determine eligibility and understand their options.”

If Special Enrollment eligibility requirements are not met, individuals must wait until the next Open Enrollment period to purchase healthcare. They might also be subject to penalties and fees for failure to obtain Minimum Essential Coverage prior to the February 15, 2015, deadline.
