Rumex International Co. Announces Refractive Surgery Innovation with New Single-Step Toric Marker

The single-step toric marker, designed by Jesse Richman, M.D., provides ophthalmologists the unique ability to mark the horizontal meridian of the visual axis and an intended axis of toric placement when performing a refractive surgery that requires the use of limbal relaxing incisions or intraocular lens implantation, such as cataract removal and corneal remodeling. The standard set for refractive surgery includes a toric marker and a pair of instruments for intra-op marking (Mendez degree gauge and Bores axis marker); the single-step toric marker requires only the pre-operational marking, skipping the intra-op step. This helps to increase accuracy and decrease the potential for error.

According to Richman, "The single-step toric marker is weighted in the back, which allows ophthalmologists to maintain a tighter, closer grip on the instrument, enhancing their precision." Richman's toric marker also features an ergonomic handle with angulation that allows surgeons to avoid contact with a patient's lower eyelid in surgery, which can impede accuracy. The toric marker's outer barrel indentations also help facilitate smoother rotation.

Richman added that, "The single-step toric marker's design also ensures that markings and high contrast scales are far more visible to surgeons than they are with other toric markers; this visibility is without a doubt one of the most important components for ensuring that a refractive surgery is performed as accurately as possible."
