Early research indicates humanoid robots increase learning engagement in children with autism

With an estimated 1 in 68 American children affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), the prevalence has increased ten-fold in the past 40 years. A leading expert on autism therapy and intervention programs, Dr. Pamela Rollins, MS, Ed.D., associate professor of Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas, presented preliminary research that indicates children who interact with social robots are more engaged in autism therapy compared to interactions with humans. By helping children with ASD identify emotions and specific social interactions, they are better able to achieve academic and personal success. Dr. Rollins teaches graduate-level courses on the assessment and treatment of children and ASD at the Callier Center for Communication Disorders. She has more than 30 years of experience researching, teaching and clinically practicing with children on the autism spectrum.
