“It is fitting that a competition recognizing the entire supply chain–from material source to distributor to designer/craftsperson–will be juried by a wood scientist, a veneer quality control specialist, and a master craftsman.” - Alan Hubbard

The Eleventh Annual Veneer Tech Craftsman’s Challenge™ is now accepting entries, and Veneer Technologies announces the 2015 panel that will decide this international design competition highlighting achievement in the use of natural wood veneer products. The judges are Mavis Morgan, Timber Products Company; Paul Schurch, Paul Schurch Woodwork; and Gene Wengert, also known as “The Wood Doctor.”
“It is fitting that a competition recognizing the entire supply chain–from material source to distributor to designer/craftsperson–will be juried by a wood scientist, a veneer quality control specialist, and a master craftsman,” comments Veneer Tech’s Alan Hubbard, face veneer sales manager. “This year we’ve established a dedicated Marquetry category, given the strength of past entries featuring this veneerwork, and who better to judge this craft than Paul Schurch?”
Schurch, a prior Craftsman’s Challenge grand prizewinner, owns a custom studio in Santa Barbara, California, known for fine inlaid marquetry furniture and art projects. He also teaches veneerwork and furniture making workshops across the country. He returns to the Craftsman’s Challenge judge panel for the second time.
Mavis Morgan has been with Timber Products Company for 28 years, beginning in California and relocating in 1996 to the company’s hardwood/plywood plant in Corinth, Mississippi, where she first was lay up supervisor and now manages the grading room and is in charge of procurement of hardwood veneer for Timber Products.
Gene Wengert is Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and president of The Wood Doctor’s Rx, LLC. A former professor and extension specialist at Virginia Tech and researcher at the U.S. Forest Products Lab, Wengert teaches many on-site practical wood processing classes and seminars each year for the wood products industry. He is the author of eight practical books and has published over 400 articles relating to the wood products industry, including his monthly column “Ask the Wood Doctor” in FDMC magazine.
