A recent survey by the Demand Institute sought to learn what aspects of a home's location are most appealing to home buyers, and revealed that the location of a home prompts most moving decisions. Realtor Magazine summarized findings in an article titled Top Reasons People Want to Move published on February 25, 2015.
"Most shoppers for a new home purchase start with location. The home's style and features are secondary to more typical Minneapolis home buyer," says Jenna Thuening, owner of Home Destination.
Currently, 36 percent of residents in Minneapolis have lived in their homes for more than 5 years, while 22 percent of the Minneapolis population has moved in the last year. Realtor Magazine's report on life styles in the metro reflects that family patterns for living at one home are slightly longer than the national average. The percentage of Minneapolis metro individuals who do not move within 5 years is 36%, while the national average is 35%.
One in three U.S. households say they plan to move in the next five years, according to a survey conducted by the Demand Institute of 10,000 households' current living situations. When considering the task of moving, it's the location of a home that is what prompts moving decisions. For current and future sellers, knowing what aspects of a home's location are most appealing to home buyers can help them better prepare for a successful sale.

Individual hoping to move their household to a location for climate reasons, choose Western and Southern U.S. destinations most often. Which top location characteristics were identified as “very important” include:
- Amenities and local shops are in walking distance - 39%
- Neighborhood rated higher for quality schools - 34%
- Close proximity to work - 32%
- Diverse neighborhood demographics and culture - 26%
- Location with easy access to public transit - 25%
Some individuals move to a new home because a certain area is too expensive to live, or they are seeking a city where officials strongly support small businesses, or a location with more job opportunities, specific climate or culture. All those reasons to move fall under the umbrella of location, location, location.
"There are many reasons people either stay or move to another home. While there are many strong motivations behind relocation to a new neighborhood, the desire to own a home remains strong," adds Thuening.
