Sierra Regional Spine Institute, which offers treatment options for back pain, is proud to announce that they are sponsoring one of their employees who is also a gymnast and powerlifter, Austin Showalter, to compete in the United States of America Power Lifting Federation competition on March 28th.

At the competition, Showalter will attempt to break another record for his age and weight class. He previously broke two American Powerlifting Association records for power lifting in his age and weight class at the age of 19. For the first record, Showalter weighed 148 pounds and lifted 335 pounds (this lift also broke the world record). For the second, he was 165 pounds and lifted 355 pounds.

Showalter is currently 20 years old, weighs 163 pounds, and is 5’5”, and he hopes to break another world record at the upcoming competition. Showalter says that he likes power lifting because it helps him to stay mentally and physically healthy, which helps him avoid health issues.

"I love power lifting! It helps me stay healthy physically and mentally, and to avoid experiencing medical problems similar to the ones that I had as a child," Showalter said.

Showalter lived through a smattering of different maladies as a child and has experienced a number of health issues in his life. Showalter lived with a skin disease that required him to have daily injections for an entire year and was in and out of the hospital for biopsies. He has also undergone a hip replacement, two knee surgeries, and a shoulder surgery.

"Sierra Regional Spine decided to sponsor Austin because his physical abilities are inspirational,” said Star Chenoweth, PA-C at Sierra Regional Spine Institute. β€œIt shows how someone with previous orthopedic injuries or illnesses can continue to excel in all aspects of life, including being a world class athlete."
