R & R Trucking, Inc. of Joplin, Mo., announces its new initiative designed to assist team company drivers who wish to transition into becoming team owner operators.

“At R & R our drivers come first,” CEO Phil Nelson said. “We know that if we can help our driver teams become more successful then the company overall becomes more successful, too.”

According to Vonda Cooper, vice president of operations, the new initiative is a huge commitment on the part of the company as well as company teams desiring to make the conversion.

“This is not an instantaneous move. We have to evaluate the performance of the company team, and then it is a step-by-step process that involves providing that team with the company’s financial information to build a business plan to become owner operators,” Cooper said.

The decision by R & R Trucking to aid company teams in developing into owner-operator teams was not done in haste. Its management spent two years providing information to one of the company’s teams and monitored that team for seven months after it had made the shift to owner operator.

It all started when the Wolters informed R & R Trucking that they had a goal to own their own truck. According to Jeff Wolter, he and his wife were making great money before they made the move. “We were making over $100,000 a year at R & R driving as a company team, but we were at a point in our lives when we wanted to be in complete control of our own destiny,” Jeff said.

In their quest to become owner operators, the Wolters asked R & R management if they would help them build a business plan in the hopes of making the transition a successful one.

“We provided the Wolters with the load revenue, fuel and maintenance costs, and all other costs associated with the truck over a two-year period,” Kevin McKelvy, vice president of administration, said.
