Zero Discharge Technologies has published its Toxic Use Reduction Case Study that shows a reduction of 90 percent of chemical waste and water usage at Poly-Plating by more than 98 percent.

The case study is available for viewing and downloading through the company’s web site at http://www.zerodtech.com.

Founded in 1983, Zero Discharge Technologies, Inc. provides diffusion dialysis systems for the recycling of contaminated acids. The company also has developed electro-dialysis systems for the purification of plating baths and other baths commonly used in electroplating.

The company’s customizable purification systems are capable of removing deleterious ions from solutions thereby allowing reuse of a “spent” bath. In addition to the ability to recycle the previously unusable bath the removed contaminant can usually be concentrated to significantly decrease waste removal costs. The processes result in a 90 percent reduction of water usage and chemical wastes, creating re-usable baths and significantly reducing disposal costs.

These innovative systems increase both process quality and profitability while simultaneously moving the plating and manufacturing industry toward environmentally sustainable business practices.

The published study involves equipment installed at Poly-Plating, a metal plating company in Chicopee, MA.

After installing integral diffusion dialysis and electro-dialysis equipment, acid purchases were reduced to 1% of previous levels, disposal costs were cut by 98%, and water usage has been cut from 78,000 gallons per day to 880 gallons per day.

“Poly-Plating has been successfully closed loop on water for over 28 years,” said ZDT founder Edwin Ondrick. “We have customers who have been closed loop for over 25 years.”
