The senior living community, Village at Proprietors Green in Marshfield, MA is presenting a free, educational program on “Understanding Loved Ones with Dementia” on Wednesday, May 27 at 6 PM. The community, which features three distinct neighborhoods, independent living, traditional assisted living and memory care, will host well-known Alzheimer’s expert and educator Peter W. Ham.

Mr. Ham, a licensed mental health counselor, is also the former vice-president for programs and services at the MA/NH Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. He will lead an interactive discussion of how best to understand and interact with someone with dementia, and how loved ones can gain acceptance as they learn how to help a family member or friend through a diagnosis.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, an estimated 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. Of those, nearly 5.1 million are over age 65 and two-thirds are women. Additionally, the Association reports that nearly 18 billion hours of volunteer care was given to patients with Alzheimer’s last year by their family members and friends.
