Model Industry Leader Calls for Tighter Regulations
Justin Brown, owner of Wilhelmina Austin, met with Texas State legislatures on stricter rules for model/talent agencies.
On April 13, 2015, Justin Brown, Director of Wilhelmina Austin and previous owner of Texas Acting And Modeling Academy, met with the office of Texas State Representative Dawnna Dukes at the Capitol. Brown initiated the meeting with hopes to create more protection for consumers and a greater transparency regarding the conflicts of simultaneously owning or operating a modeling school and agency.
"As a previous owner of a school and affiliated agency, I have seen firsthand how this leads to conflicts of interest," said Brown. Possible bait and switch methods and high pressure/misleading sales tactics are among some of the issues that were addressed in the meeting.
Brown is hoping to amend the current rules regarding modeling and acting schools, which are currently regulated by the Texas Workforce Commission. He is looking to propose new regulations on talent agencies that would be enforced by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Brown will work directly with Texas state lawmakers over the next couple of months to monitor and craft legislation that will hopefully be introduced in the next session. "We are looking to garner public support as we push for change in the industry standards," stated Brown.
