Founder and chief executive of ChemWerth receives second honorary degree for his work to improve access to high quality, affordable generic medicines

Mr. Werth has committed his professional life to improving global access to high quality, affordable generic pharmaceuticals

Peter J. Werth, President and CEO of ChemWerth, Inc., has received an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the University of Connecticut. As the owner and founder of ChemWerth, a pioneer in developing and supplying generic active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), Mr. Werth has committed his professional life to improving global access to high quality, affordable generic pharmaceuticals.

Mr. Werth began his professional career working as an R&D scientist in the early 1960’s. He struck out on his own in 1979, working from a room above the garage in his Woodbridge, Connecticut home. Mr. Werth, at this point a veteran in the generic pharmaceutical industry, had a vision. He believed it was possible to produce US FDA-quality active pharmaceutical ingredients in China in compliance to cGMP standards, which would make generic drugs more accessible and affordable.

At the time, no one thought it was possible. The environment was too complicated and companies didn't think sourcing quality APIs from China was realistic. Werth rolled up his sleeves and went to work. He became versed in the local Chinese market and worked tirelessly with manufacturers to teach them regulatory practices to achieve cGMP certified quality. Dozens of Chinese factories received their first FDA approvals as a result of his efforts. Fast forward 35 year later, and sourcing APISs from China is the industry norm providing a significant cost savings on medication for millions.

Mr. Werth is also a recognized philanthropist, establishing the Werth Family Foundation in 2001 to support higher education, children and human services, the arts and the environment. Mr. Werth’s immeasurable contributions to health care have benefited scores of Americans, as well as created jobs in Connecticut and China. His philanthropy has touched the lives of thousands of people in Connecticut, across the country, and around the globe.

ChemWerth provides generic active pharmaceutical ingredient to regulated markets worldwide with specialization in oral, injectable, topical and veterinary products. With sources for reliable, high quality APIs from FDA approved facilities in China, United States, Europe and India, ChemWerth provides the highest standards of quality.
