THE ADVOCATOR GROUP, LLC—The Advocator Group is proud to promote Disability Insurance Awareness Month in May. Many individuals who work with the Social Security Disability advocacy firm to apply for SSDI benefits have already lived with disabling conditions for several months, even years and have felt the emotional and financial impact that this has had on them and their families. Unexpected illness or injury can have a much more damaging effect on the livelihood of American families if they have not proactively planned for a sudden loss of income.

Unfortunately, many American wage earners find themselves physically, emotionally, and financially unprepared when illness or injury renders them unable to work because they underestimate their likelihood of becoming disabled due to their current health or non-physical job. The Social Security Administration estimates that just over 1 in 4 of today's 20 year olds will become disabled before reaching retirement age.

Disability Insurance Awareness Month is not only an ideal time to learn the facts about the prevalence of disabilities in the American workforce, but also to examine one’s preparedness for unexpected illness or injury. According to a 2010 study done by the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA), 90 percent of American workers rated their ability to earn an income as valuable or very valuable in their long-term financial security– yet they do not have a plan in place to protect it should a disability occur.

The Advocator Group’s mission is to preserve or improve the financial well-being of its clients. CEO Julie Turpin adds that this goes well beyond simply helping them obtain SSDI or Medicare benefits. Turpin states, “Disability Insurance Awareness Month is an opportunity for us to help our clients to learn more about the conditions that affect them and the many ways they can protect their families if they experience a long-term loss of income. By promoting this campaign, we seek to encourage our clients as well as their friends and families to take preventative financial and health care measures and to research the benefits of Social Security Disability Insurance. Many of our clients have worked hard for many years in order to provide for their families, and we want to help provide them with peace of mind that they are making decisions that protect their savings and plans for the future.”

The CDA highlights some staggering statistics regarding disability education in America in their "Disability Disconnect" graphic and The Advocator Group encourages people of all ages and physical and mental capabilities to utilize this resource as well as research on SSDI benefits to ensure that they are taking the necessary steps to protect their monthly income and future retirement benefits should illness or injury occur.
